STAT 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Dependent And Independent Variables, Scatter Plot, Homicide
Document Summary
This chapter is the beginning of considering relationships between variables. In chapters 1, 2 and 3 we considered single variables in isolation eg amount spent on health care, height of young woman. It is well-known that variables are connected, for example, height and weight (of people) are related. Tall people are more likely to weigh more than short people. Another way of saying this is to say: the taller the person, the more we expect the person to weigh. More mathematically, as height increases so does weight. Of course we are speaking generally: two people of the same height can have different weights, but in general, we expect taller people to weigh more than shorter people. We know that there are relationships amongst these variables. Chapters 4 and 5 deal with relationships between two quantitative variables. It is possible to analyse relationships between more than two variables (some of which may be categorical), but this is not part of stat104.
