Was very popular in the 60s, with talcott parsons. School of thought in sociology (and anthropology) that assumes society should be understood as a system of inter- dependent parts. The different parts of social life depend on each other and fulfill functions contributing to social order and its reproduction. Consensus view of society: assumes shared values, norms, attitudes, and beliefs maintaining social order. Social order maintained by people acting in defined roles, performing certain functions. Illness as deviance: an unnatural state of the human body, causing both physical and social dysfunction. Example: talcott parsons - influential in 1950s . Healthcare: exists to restore and maintain social order. Health is important if society is to function smoothly; people must be able to perform their roles.
