To inflict a penalty on someone for committing a transgression. Authorized imposition of deprivations because person guilty of some violation. Withholding of some right (e. g. , freedom) imposing a special burden (e. g. , fine) What is the purpose of punishment: retribution, rehabilitation, incapacitation, deterrence, boundary-setting, education, norm reinforcement, restoration. Getting even with offender; revenge; an eye for an eye . Logic is that the offender should suffer the pain that s/he inflicted on others. Retributive justice must be proportionate to the crime committed i. e. , a thief cannot be put to death, but a murderer can. Proponents of retributive justice argue that it can help in satisfying the resentment of the victim/victim"s families. Aim is to rehabilitate, or heal , the offender so that they will not commit an offence in the future. A crucial part of rehabilitation is that the offender must recognize their wrongdoing. See wrongs of their ways -- opportunity to start new lives.
