Document Summary

Aware: being able to understand your surroundings. Brain death: brain doesn"t respond on eeg for 1 hour. No evidence that they understand what is around them. If someone is in this state for long enough, they may not be recoverable. People can still be recovered from this. Her husband wanted to let her go, her parents did not. Can"t ask a person what state they are in. There is a large case of misdiagnosis between vegetative and minimally conscious state. Can possibly look at a brain scan to differentiate (the minimally conscious brain is more active in the thalamus and conscious center). Do you understand that someone is speaking to you: speech comprehension. Anesthetized (differing levels, from slightly to knocked out) and then checked to see how their brain reacts to sound. The sound areas are activated even under deep sedation when a language is played. Both speech and visual areas light up.
