PSYC 301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Cerebral Circulation, Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Neuroplasticity
Document Summary
Says nothing about what the brain is doing. Cheap and fast way to show you what the body looks like. Use radiation, it"s a 3d x-ray: circulates your body to get all dimensions, different body parts absorb different amounts of radiation. Takes 60 to 90 seconds to get an image. Valuable for diagnosing brain swelling, bleeds in the brain . While the levels are small and not a huge deal, having scans often (~once a month), is not the best thing. Gives a good picture, but there is a way to get an even more detailed picture. Basically a really strong magnet : causes a portion of your hydrogen atoms to line up on the magnetic field. Very loud, hearing protection is essential to retain hearing (you"ll go deaf otherwise) Send radiofrequency pulse that knocks them out of alignment which gives off a resonance signal.
