PSYC 217 Lecture Notes - Lecture 25: Three Steps, Statistical Hypothesis Testing, Scientific Method
Document Summary
Develop a research idea into a study with a strong research design. Understand diff. types of analysis and interpret data. Critically consume research reported in the media. The scientific method: identifying a problem/research question. Addressing limitations characteristics of a design that impact/influence the interpretation of the findings for your research. Common assumptions: generating theories and hypotheses. Parsimony adoption of simplest assumption in formulation of a theory (or interpretation of data). Falsifiability requirement that the test of a scientific hypothesis can possible show that the hypothesis is incorrect. A directional hypothesis/prediction is one that not only is more specific in the prediction of a specific relationship but also in which direction the relationship will go. Nondirectional = i predict that arousal and test perf. are related. Directional = i predict that as arousal increases, test perf. decreases. One and two tailed one-tailed is a test of a directional hypothesis. The prediction can only be made in 1 direction.
