A proposal for a new clinical disorder: this clinical disorder is characterized by: Addictive and compulsive behaviour: the disorder is statistically rare: only about 2-5% of people report as experiencing it consistently, there are no known causes or cures. Most symptoms of disorders are also present in everyday normal functioning (pt barnum efect will get you!) The prevalence of most disorders is low (the odds are in your favour) Only a fully trained clinical psychologist can diagnose you with a clinical disorder, and self-diagnosis ability is quite poor. Big questions: what"s abnormal: what counts as a disorder, option #1: atypical or rare behaviour. Problem: many atypical/rare things are not disorders (e. g. , happiness) Problem: is atypical always bad: option #2: when normal psychological functions no longer work as they should (e. g. , as in heart disease) Problem: we don"t yet know what normal psychological function is. Problem: don"t confuse variability in function for lack of: option #3: disorders are socially unacceptable behaviours.
