Can we minimize discrimination for good: stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination are often used interchangeably, but they refer to distinct concepts (i. e. , you can have one without the others) Stereotype: beliefs about typical behaviours and characteristics of a certain group or category of people or things. Prejudice: attitudes both good and bad about people or things that belong to a certain group or category. Discrimination: behaviours positive and negative that are inluenced by prejudice towards a certain group or category: factors that generally lead from negative stereotypes to prejudice to discrimination: Outgroup homogeneity: believing that all members of an out- group are exactly the same, while all members of your group are very diverse (e. g. , all women are attracted to dominant men. ) Group fundamental attribution error: believing that everyone in a group that"s not yours acts the way they do because of their disposition, not situation (e. g. , homeless people are lazy )
