Rules: methods: data can be collected in many diferent ways, and each method has its own pros and cons, experimental methods: a set of rules and procedures we should follow in order to gather data. Rules: methods (natural observation: naturalistic observation: observing participants in the wild or natural habitat and noting down their behaviours in response to various everyday situations. High external validity: observed behaviours are likely. Real and can be generalized to other people and situations. Cant actually tell us which aspects of the environment caused the behaviour. We (usually) have to tell people they may be watched, introducing demand characteristics back in. High possibility for experimenter bias, as they are coding behaviours. Rules: methods (case studies: case studies: observing and measuring the behaviour of a single, usually somehow unique participant over an extended period of time. Can help us detect and work with rare/unique cases.
