Document Summary

Lo 4. 2 track how our minds build up perceptions. After being transduced, our minds organize the bits of sensory data into more meaningful concepts. Our brain pieces together: what"s the sensory field, what was just there a moment ago, what we remember from our past. We attend to many sense modalities simultaneously, this is called parallel processing. 2 important concepts that go along with parallel processing are: bottom-up and top-down processing. Bottom-up processing: processing in which a whole is constructed from parts. Top-down processing: conceptually driven processing influenced by beliefs and expectancies. We perform a perceptual set when our expectations influence our perceptions. The process by which we perceive stimuli consistently across varied conditions is perceptual constancy. There are several kinds of perceptual constancy: shape, size, and colour constancy. We don"t see the shape, size, or colour changing despite the objective fact that they do change. Selective attention: how we focus on specific inputs.
