Document Summary

Provides a response to the skeptic through an appeal to common sense. Two human hands exist by saying here is one hand and making a certain gesture with the left while saying here is another. Argument: here is one hand, here is another hand. If hands exist, then there are external things. He says that it would not have been a proof unless 3 conditions were satis ed: 1) unless the premiss which i adduced as proof of the conclusion was di erent from the conclusion i addicted to to prove. 2) unless the individual who o ered the argument knows the premises to be true. 3) unless the conclusion follow the logically from the premises. If people suspected that one of his hands was arti cial he might be said to get a proof of his proposition by coming up and examine the suspected hand close up, perhaps touching and pressing it.
