Nothing natural about the states --> they are essentially products of social and political processes. Considered a very recent creation (150,000 years of "humanity", 8000 years since the emergence of "states", 300 years of "modern states", 50 years "universal" model) The supreme civil power and government vested in a country or nation. A body of people occupying a defined territory and organized under a sovereign government. Weberian conception: political organization that claims and upholds a monopoly on legitimate use of physical force in a given territory. State: a political entity recognized for its sovereignty. Country: a geographical area defined by the territorial sovereignty of the state. Nation: is a group of people defined by common criteria --> i. e. citizenship. Government: is an organization through which individuals control and make decisions for the state.
