Document Summary

White paper (1969): was presented to parliament by minister of indian. Affairs and northern development (jean chretien and prime minister. The intent was to abolish the indian act (eliminate the treaties and assimilate the indians fully into canadian society) At the time of the white paper, aboriginal communities had already lost 90% of their populations due to rampant disease, interruptions to trade and food routes, war and industrialization. Indian act (1876) --> had lead to residential schools, high poverty rates within aboriginals, strife and intensive death rates (this was due to little treaty implementation) National indian brotherhood --> felt that the documents left out the concerns and raised consultations (in order to attempt to maintain a relation) Problematic on multiple levels, as leaders were left upset. 1973: aboriginal activists and their allies went to the supreme court, and agreed that aboriginal title to land exited before european colonization of north america. 1982: established the constitution act was recognized and affirmed.
