Street vendors of food and other goods make up a vibrant part of many urban environments. Urban informality consists not just of vendors but shanty towns, slums, favelas and squatter settlements. Slums, squatter settlements, favelas, shacks, homeless encampments, refugee camps. 54% of the world"s population lives in cities/urban street -> expected to increase to 60% by 20150 (+2. 5 b ppl, 90% of that increase will be concentrated in the global south) Currently 2b people live in poverty -> contributes to informal housing types. Large refugee populations, living in vulnerable situation. Many of informal squatter settlements improve over time when ppl are not under threats. Not all urban informality is not always it seems (not always messy or illegal) Those without security of tenure often face threats of (1) evictions and clearances and (2) relocation and compensation.
