Document Summary

Floodplains --> built up by sediments deposited during floods, essentially the low ground which is adjacent to stream channels they can form 3 different types of migration: Bedrock channels generally do not have floodplains, which makes defining bankfull flow difficult since the bank top is not visible. Overbank deposition: deposition of suspended load that settles out from overbank flow. They develop natural levees: when the flow slows down whilst spilling out on the channel, the coarsest material settle close to the channel and form the natural levees, also sandy deposits decimeters to meters high along channel margins. Generally made of coarse material (e. g. sand) with finer material (silt and clay) --> they dominate the deposition farther from the main channel. Flood plain surface is typically lower than the elevation of natural levees --> this leads to the development of swamps and yazoo channels.
