Document Summary

Depression - era explicitness while at the time would have been perceived as mindless entertainment. Deals with depression in a very strange way. Busby berkeley musical numbers - blur the stage and reality - even weirder. Impossible views - that are only possible in cinema/dont look like the rest of the film- theatre goer would never see this. 3d aspects, we move with the scenes, we become integrated with the scene- lose the proscenium arch. Birds eyes views of showgirls movie magic makes many of the spectacle in the these numbers, not translatable in anyway to a theatre going experience. Le roy - static shots/not so dynamic movements. Stilted sense to his shots of the film -> disconnect with what cinema can do. Sit-com esque feel (theatrical) generic conventions of the musical - classical dramatic narrative- shakespearean/ Repetition - a way to express external happenings in society/unlike other musicals in which uses music to delve into one"s personal feelings.
