Ovoid shaped (3cm long x 2 cm wide) paired organ in pelvis. Suspended by the mesovarium: folds in lining (peritoneum) of abdominopelvic cavity. Mesovarium is lined by a mesothelium (simple squamous epithelium) and contains a loose connective tissue with nerves and vasculature to support the ovaries. From the outermost layer to the inner layer: Tunica albuginea: dense irregular connective tissue (many collagen fibers) just below germinal epithelium. Ovarian cortex: loose connective tissue; contains the ovarian follicles (up to 1 million at birth and 400,000 at menarche but only ~400 fully develop during reproductive period from menarche to menopause). Corpus luteum will develop and degenerate in the ovarian cortex.
