Document Summary
Lecture 11 asian stagnation in india (?) lomoarcpsd. It is a prominent idea in history among western historians that asia fell behind europe because it stagnated. The west managed to industrialise and develop military supremacy, while india, china and japan became complacent and indolent, closing their doors to the west and as a result fell behind: warfare amongst europeans in the 18th century. The period from 1500-1650 was one of great violence in europe, but they did not improve. From 1650- 1787, there were only two periods when europe was universally at peace. During much of this time there was not just one but several conflicts in europe. In the 16th century there were only 10 years of european peace, only 4 in the 17th century, and 16 in the 18th century. One of the amazing contradictions of european dominance is its previous divided state. It is true that europe has something of a military edge in the eighteenth century.
