Women helping women: class discussion on the documentary vessel . Vessel was a spectacular documentary about women helping each other, educating people, and finding clever solutions to complicated problems. One of my favourite films shown in this class, it tells the story of several dutch women that went to extraordinary lengths to get safe abortions in countries where it is illegal. One woman dies every ten minutes because of restrictive abortion laws, however on international waters, the countries flagship rules apply so women are able to get abortions legally. The ship made its maiden voyage in 2001 and women on waves have been working toward reproductive justice in various ways ever since. The amount of backlash the women on waves boat received was shocking, particularly in ireland, poland and portugal; the latter sending out warships to keep them out of the country"s waters.
