VCULT300 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Carte De Visite, Institutional Critique, Patent Lens
Document Summary
An experience of seeing time unfold itself. The viewer finds themselves experiencing history through snapshots of what the curators characterize as the world"s most popular hobby . The exhibition displayed cameras as they have evolved throughout history, putting the emphasis of the exhibition on the apparatus, with the resulting photo taking a secondary role. The focus on the camera made this exhibition as much technological as it was artistic and successfully created a show that was interactive, compelling and informative. The space itself is very liminal, in that the viewer is experiencing two technological realities at once. The physical presence of the historical cameras collided with the ever-present smartphone, creating an interesting mediation between viewer and camera. While a viewer might be hindered from fully and mindfully experiencing the exhibition before them because of their phone, it does encourage awareness of the pervasiveness of the cell-phone in contemporary institutional critique.
