Lecture 5 deconstructing racism: prejudice, discrimination, power. Power: universal human activity, out-group distance (we/other/them, etc, cultural superiority, other ways of thinking/behaving/beliefs is the normal and inferior to your own. Normal : everyday human activity, simplifying the world, need to categorize things becomes behavior, racialized minorities can also be prejudice but not racist. Conscious + unconsciousness: conscious most from american research, unconsciousness. People think they are color-blind but study shows this is wrong. Large percentage of americans and possibly canadians have negative associations with ie - black males. Social dimensions social control: usually see it in a larger picture. Younger canadians hold more negative views about religious groups crrf/ciim (2014) Higher prejudice among young people than older generation. Older generation is not our parents the people who went through the civil rights generation: discrimination. Ie - insurance company discriminate against young male drivers. Human rights commission discrimination is permissible as long as they give advantage to historically discriminated groups (aboriginals)
