Introduction to prison riots: riots are fairly predictable events, prison riots are studied generally after the fact, kingston riot: two inmates murdered ryan ensor and bertram henry. Robert: 550 inmates interviewed, and 50 gave detailed statements which are extremely lengthy. Inmates took over the prison (whole central area) and opened up all cell blocks: 550 inmates took part in riot. Inmate informants and roger caron"s (cid:498)bingo(cid:499): oldest and one of the 9 penitentiaries in kingston area. Was going to be closed but wasn"t and now used for psych patients and protective custody: undesirables: sex offenders and informants, only 50 cooperated out of 550 (<10%, reasons why inmates cooperated: Inmates testified for some self-centred gain: 1. They were given parole but didn"t know they were putting their lives in danger: 2. The riot begins billie knight"s role: started in gym area just off the dome and many inmates didn"t go that night, april 14, 1971, nothing ordinary that day.
