SOC222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Juvenile Delinquency, Peer Group
Document Summary
The study of delinquency is concerned with the nature and extent of the antisocial behaviour of youth, the causes of youthful law violations, the legal rights of juveniles, and the prevention and treatment of delinquent behaviour. Application responses to preventing it to happen in the first place or address it after it happens. How well these theories have helped in society. Just because something is popular doesn"t mean its right. Rarely been applied in real world (learn why later) Not accurate for all crimes, for all youths etc. There is no one theory that explains everything: what consistutes, under what conditions does it occur. Causes: frequency (one time or every week etc, duration (why some youths commit crime into adulthood or stop, seriousness of crime (gangs vs shoplift) A theory is an interrelated set of concepts formed into propositions that specify the relationship between these: micro/macro, can include social, situational, societal. How do we define theory: x causes youth crime.
