Document Summary

Examines deviance as a process of social interaction. Social groups create deviance by making rules, applying those rules to particular people & labelling them outsiders. Society is the source of definitions of deviance. Examines the functions of deviance & dysfunctions of society. Deviance functions to unify society, show what is allowed or not allowed, call attention to flaws in the system, promote social adaptation. Examines deviance as a product of social conflict or inequality. Examines the status of women as certain victims and offenders, and reflects the continuing subordination of women in patriarchal society. Differential association theory: deviance arises from association with various others that yields an excess of pro-deviant over anti-deviant definitions (techniques of neutralization). Labeling theory: being labeled deviant by society (i. e. , negative societal reaction to certain behavior) leads people to see themselves as deviant and to live up to this self-image by committing more deviant acts. (primary, secondary, amplifying process).
