Collecions of people who interact on the basis of shared expectaions regarding one another"s behaviour. Individuals have a variety of socially diferent posiions or statuses within the groups to which they belong & acions of individuals are guided by norms. Children grow up within a broad, highly straiied social system. Lower richmond school serves children from kindergarten through ith grade located in a narrow street in a large north-eastern city. The neighbourhood surrounding the school is racially segregated and many students come by bus from a poor black housing project about ten minutes away. School is located in mainly a white working class residenial neighbourhood and some apartment complexes house low income families who qualify for government assistance.
