SOC101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Eminem, Meritocracy, Class Discrimination
Document Summary
Societies are heavily influenced by their dominant forms of communication, so we are biased toward specific forms of media. Every society needs to transcend the problems of space and time through the use of communication. Time bias media are very durable, with tremendous longevity, but only for those in the vicinity. For one single common message that cannot be transmitted to large areas ie. cave drawings don"t move around the world. These include items that can be carried/transported easily (like printed materials) We need to go past the actual material transmitted by media and uncover the underlying messages. Each medium influences the mind in unconscious ways, so it is the manner in which the material is conveyed that is important. It is the change in scale and pattern that a medium introduces into society that is much more important than actual messages. The railway didn"t just introduce new ways of movement (physical object) but created jobs, leisure, convenience, etc.
