Sociology: systematic study of social behaviour in human society, uses a special point of view called the sociological perspective. Peter berger: described sociological perspective as seeing the general in the particular . Donna winslow illustrated this perspective to explain atrocities by two canadian peacekeepers who brutally murdered a somali teenager = functioned in combat/warrior culture. Canada"s military = prepare soldiers for war instead of peacekeeping, sets scene for violence toward civilians not based on ind"s personality, but the structural and cultural environment. Emile durkheim (sociology pioneers): men, protestants, wealthy people, & unmarried = higher suicide rates than women, catholic, jews, the poor, married people. Two situations help people see clearly how society shapes ind. lives: living on the margins of society living through a social crises perspective. The greater people"s social marginality = better able they are to use sociological ex; black youth growing up in finch and dufferin area of toronto understand importance of race in shaping people"s lives.
