SOC101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Dynamic Equilibrium, Antipositivism, Historical Sociology
Document Summary
Theories are a lens in which we look at society-> what we emphasize in an analysis of society and what we do not emphasize. Every theory is made up of concepts. When all the concepts are brought together, they create the theory. The way to the theory is through the concepts. These provide a structure for how to describe a society. All theories are legitimate ways of describing how society works, but they emphasize different components of the society. Structure and agency: there is a tension between structure and agency: the idea of perspective- choosing to look at the world within the frame of the perspective. Each theory helps you see different things: shared aim: knowledge of social life. Even though these theories contest each other, they have the same aim: diffe(cid:396)e(cid:374)(cid:272)es: assu(cid:373)ptio(cid:374)s of (cid:449)hat"s i(cid:373)po(cid:396)ta(cid:374)t, (cid:395)uestio(cid:374)s (cid:272)hose(cid:374) to be examined, and problems that are identified, four perspective- create controversy.
