Governing authorities/kings create laws to regulate society (ex. marriage laws: laws enacted by the state through statute. In france and britain, they take church/cannon law and translate it into state law: the state doesn"t change anything (keeps traditions of the church, marriage becomes state sanctioned, conducted by anglican priest or roman catholic priest. Common law: britain: practice of laws becoming the law through judges and courts, setting precedents as it becomes a precedent, it becomes a law. Civil code: france: codified laws written by the state/authority. Civil registration the main difference: requires ceremony conducted by roman catholic priest, publication of the bands, adheres to the idea of consent being a main component, documentation of the marriage (idea of registration)
