PSYCH257 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Sleep Deprivation, Mania, Mood Swing
Document Summary
We spend about 1/3 of our lives sleeping. Sleep assessment involves polysomnographic evaluation in sleep lab. Normal sleep: 60-90 min cycles of rem and non-rem sleep, 50% light sleep, 20% deep sleep, 30% rem sleep. Sleep efficiency: percent of time in bed spent actually sleeping. Researchers use a variety of techniques to study dreams no single technology can determine with certainty that someone is dreaming. Can occur during rem or non-rem sleep, but rem vs. non-rem dreams differ in emotional tone. Some people are unable to dream: parietal lobe damage - disruption in imaginary space that combines senses and comprises dreams. Why we dream is largely still a mystery. Complex relationship between sleep and mental health: cause vs. effect. Two major types of dsm-5 sleep disorders: dyssomnias difficulties in getting enough sleep, problems in the timing of sleep, and complaints about the quality of sleep. Related sleep disorders, circadian rhythm disorders: parasomnias abnormal events that occur during sleep.
