Lecture 3 - psychology and the legal system. The answers to these things are research; depends on the case. Respect for free and informed consent in life while you"re walking around. Respect for vulnerable persons: children or people with autism. Balancing harms and benefits: your name won"t be attached if published or will ask for consent, potential of learning something needs stress, are we learning something important enough to do this to people. The goal is to understand something so that we can predict and/or control it. This requires testing hypotheses with studies that, ideally, eliminate alternative explanations for a result (ie eliminate bias) This is a bad study but the class needs to discuss why it"s a bad study. Relating young offenders committing crime to their childhood incidents. Took 60 young offenders and asked them if they had some sort of negative childhood experience with their parents.
