To study how stress and healthy and unhealthy behaviours influence health and illness = created interdisciplinary field of behavioural medicine (integrates behaviour and medical) Health psychology: subfield of psychology that provides psychology"s contribution to behavioral medicine olden days = medical model of health. Stress: basic concepts physical and emotional responses = stress reaction stimulus or threat that causes stress = stressor. Stress: process of appraising and responding to a threatening or challenging event. Arises from events themselves than from how we appraise them. Momentary stress can mobilize the immune system for fending off infections and healing wounds. Arouses and motivates us to conquer problems. Extreme or prolonged stress = harmful risk of chronic disease increased heart problems and death. Catastrophes: can damage emotional and physical health ex; three weeks after 9/11 attack = people had trouble sleeping and concentrating.
