Personality: an individual"s characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviour persisting over time and across situations. Shy in certain situations only (e. g. , strangers, authority, opposite sex, public appearance) Possibly positive consequences (ie. , may elicit empathic response) Prome to low self-esteem, stress, loneliness, and depression. Shyness as symptom: shyness is a defense mechanism of repression, shyness is displacement of dangerous grandiosity from elsewhere in patient"s life. In social situations, when a person behaves in a shy manner, it produced good or bad outcomes: conditioned response to particular environmental stimuli, however, shyness can be unlearned through positive reinforcement. Performance in a job: personality profile is a better predictor of job performance than interview. If you come to me with shyness, i can treat you for introversion: next time i test you, you should score more towards extroversion.
