Document Summary
Not clear why we smell the quality that we do. Sometimes we have things that smell different but are chemically the same and vice versa: olfactory tract. Pathway of the cells outside of the olfactory bulb: olfactory cortex, primary, rate of activity matches the, secondary, orbital frontal, areas that respond to different substances. Cells that respond differently depending on what substance it is: see top-down effects. We can t always label smells easily, believe what they are told it is, even though it was the same smell as the smell before. 3% of the population can t smell the smell sweat. 12% can t smell musty orders: lack specific olfactory receptor proteins. Can t manufacture all 350 types of the proteins: olfactory hallucinations. Schizophrenics sometimes have them: associated with over activity of cells dopamine, producing lots of aps when there is no use for them, imbalance of the excitatory neurotransmitters. Brain tumors: factors that affect olfactory thresholds, the substance.
