Document Summary

Lecture 5: motivation (05. 29. 17: motivation is the intensity, direction, and persistence of effort a person shows toward attaining a goal. Direction is where the effort is channeled toward and if it is consistent with organizational goals. Persistence is how long a person can maintain the effort: extrinsic motivation is engaging in an activity for a tangible reward, while intrinsic motivation is engaging in an activity for its own sake. Think of studying to learn vs for a good grade. Individuals have needs that, when unsatisfied, will result in motivation. Maslow"s hierarchy of needs theory lists 5 needs (physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, self-actualization) and states that as each need is substantially satisfied, the next becomes dominant and the primary motivator. Maslow believed needs were innate, universal, and unchanging. However, most behavior is driven by multiple needs. Alderfer"s erg theory reworked the previous needs into three groups of core needs: existence, relatedness, and growth.
