Functions of the hand: precision pinch, power grasp, a sensory organ, communication. Must have: strong, mobile framework, non-slip, pliable gripping surface (fingerprints, strong muscles without bulk, sensitivity to both external and internal. Fingertips have sweat glands: they have fibrous septa that prevent skin movement, and allows you to feel the resilience of the subcutaneous fat because it is encased in small compartments in the septa. No expansion is allowed, which contributes to early onset of severe pain and even death of tissue when the finger tips are infected or injured. Easier to grasp skin on the dorsal side than it is on the palmar side (due to the increased elasticity, laxity, and mobility on the dorsal side) Triangular fibrous sheet which occupies the palm of the hand and is firmly bound to the deeper layers of skin. Protects underlying structures, and doesn"t allow the skin of the palm to be pinched up easily.
