50% divorce rate in Canada
Individualist vs. Collectivist I’m going to go study in Australia because I want to vs.
I need to stay here and help support my family
Collectivist culture Function like community and not individualistic, MOST*
Aboriginal Hard to tell if individualist or collectivist but more collectivist in
orientation
2010 immigration to Canada:
More coming from developing world than developed
Less from modern economies and more from fast growing economies (like
China, Philippines)
1970 UK US ex. China = Democracy Communism (although democratic
has moved more to capitalism)
o When you immigrate you don’t leave your country of origin’s
values and political beliefs behind ex. Russian student who said
he’d be slaughtered because he smiles so much in Canada now (they
are constantly oppressed, don’t show emotion – smile can be genuine,
not just when you need something from someone)
Humans aren’t big fans of Outsiders – Humans have a natural predisposition to
mistrust outsiders
Possible factors of social exclusion: Employment
In the US, communities (cities, urban areas) that were more diverse had more
distrust and were less likely to get engaged in civic duties (ex. Run for office, do
clean-ups of park, e.t.c.) Could support views that people with ethnic diversities
should not live together (like Trump)
Typically, however, exposure to different groups of people More
innovation and creativity (esp. on coastal regions)
It may not be so much that we don’t like others, we just like people like us
more Natural gravitation to them based on cultural experiences (ex.
Prof doesn’t ask if people are American yet most people she’s friends with
are) Impacts geographic area
o More likely to live among cultural community when arriving and then
perhaps move out when getting more economic stability
94% of Syrians’ applications get accepted for immigration – More people from
Columbia apply too but less are accepted (huge drug problem there although they
don’t really even do drugs because US especially does, even Canada)
$20 Billion to have immigrants sell hot dogs when they could be working as
engineers Nothing wrong with selling hot dogs but if they have the skills of
engineers let them get jobs that allow them to utilize/practice them and build on
them
Some cultures/communities (ex. Islam) frowns upon borrowing with interest, in a
way that you cannot pay back
From 1970 to 1980 Jane & Finch neighborhood went from 1,300 people to
34,000 (1500% growth in 10 years* - People need housing, more schools (people
