Panama canal - 21,000 out of 26,000 of workers contracted malaria during the building of the canal. Many of the public health lessons began here. Got rid of pools of water, cut back grass, used rudimentary insecicides, quinine, bed screens. Cdc was born out of this crisis. The distribuion of insecicide-treated nets (itns) is one of the major focuses of internaional eforts to prevent malaria. Nets must be re-treated once in a while. Lobbying for reducion of taxes on these nets is very important. 1 net can protect a child from malaria for 3 years. Prevalence of malaria dropped by about half, once the itn campaigns kicked in. More importantly, eforts to educate people on how to use these nets correctly. Basic resources available strong impact on whether a person is at risk of developing malaria or not (where a person works, inside versus outside, are there swamps around, is insecicide available, etc.
