Factors leading to european colonization: development of nations and monarchical power and authority, leads to creating empires, growth of capitalism and increased commerce, leads to search for wealth, curiosity and intellectual change, now technological, scientific, and intellectual ideas/challenges. Leads to colonization by britain and france in na by late 1500s: british eastern areas of modern us, nfld, nova scotia, french area of quebec (and into central us), maritimes, and nfld. Average people (merchants, traders, farmers) why do they come: economic and religious opportunity (land, independence, religious freedom, religious piety, fur trade was a valuable commodity. Colonies allowed to make their own laws. Influence on law: colonies have adapted flexibility in legislatures that can allow to them to copy or veto a law. Variation in law existed from one colony to another. Colonies acquired the civil law of france: civil law: law is made by legislators (with advice of legal scholars) written as a code.
