Document Summary

A critical edition engages with the evidence of the text and explains how the text was established, while an un-critical edition just gives you the text. However, this is more of a descriptive difference than a quality difference. (e. g. Project guntenberg is an un-critical edition as well as anthologies often used in. University courses [which are actually called derivitive editions]). They all have different motivations and emphasis and they all leave something out. All these schools of editing try to figure out what to do with variables and they all have different solutions for textual instability. They also ask how logical/scientific you want the text to be as opposed to informed knowledge (editorial judgment) is used in creating the addition. Lachmann systematized textual editing he is worried about editorial judgement and therefore, basis editing on the family tree of text as opposed to pick-and- choosing variables.
