CS200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Millennium Development Goals, Gross Domestic Product, Interdisciplinarity
Document Summary
International development, or, as it is sometimes called, global development, is a concept that lacks a universally accepted definition. It is a concept most often used in a holistic and multi- disciplinary context of human development. International development therefore may encompass issues of foreign aid, governance, health care, education, gender equality, disaster preparedness, infrastructure, economics, human rights, and environment. In the process of developing active and sustainable communities, social justice and mutual respect must be the core elements. Community development expresses values of fairness, equality, opportunity, choice, accountability, participation, and continuous learning. Educating, enabling, and empowering are at the core of community development. That is, we must look at the barriers that prevent people from participating in the issues that affect their lives, and prevent them from influencing power structures.
