CLAS104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Sarpedon, Lycians, Iliad
Document Summary
Trojan hero twice saved from death by the gods as if for an as-yet-unknown destiny, but is a warrior in his own right: the lycians. Glaucus is up front in battle and comes face to face with diomedes. Glaucus tells diomedes how badly he"s going to kill him. Diomedes realizes he and glaucus are ancestral guest friends. Glaucus and diomedes decide to call the battle off and become friends. Idea of good leader: always in the front of battle. Zeus realized that his son, sarpedon was doomed to die by fate. Hera knew what zeus was thinking about saving son and said not too because it would mess up everything that was fated. Zeus gives in and lets fate take its toil. Question of how powerful fate is (if zeus could try and save sarpedon from his death) To honour him lets blood rain down after his death over heads of trojans: daughters of priam.
