Module 22 (clas 104 notes): the foundation of rome--the aeneid. Greek myths had profound impact on roman myths. There was independent conceptions of italian gods equated w/ greek gods (jupiter/zeus) Also independent roman myths, but became intertwined w/ stories of greek myth. Homer"s iliad aeneas = fated to escape troy when sacked and become ruler of trojans (poseidon) Roman poet virgil = developed myth of aeneas" journey, met locals, found sites, etc. Foundation of rome = excellent example of blending of greek + roman myth. Roman national epic outset of reign of augustus shows awareness of contemporary politics. Drew upon homeric iliad and odyssey + jason and the argonauts. Poseidon helps aeneas escape b/c he is fated to survive sails to italy from troy. Aeneas leaves troy w/ crippled dad anchises on back + son ascanius. Aeneas = roman anchises + aphrodite/venus (divine ancestry of romans)
