Descendants of gods and greek nobles (the flower of greece) Argo = all men"s concerns, aea = land, king aeetes = man of the land. Jason greek hero, leader of the argonauts (quest for golden fleece); parallels w/ myth of odysseus. Phrixus (quest for golden fleece begins w/ him) Boeotian mortal king athamas + divine nephele (cloud) = phrixus and sister helle. Nephele returned to sky after birth of kids; athamas marries ino daughter of cadmus (king of thebes) Ino tries to destroy stepkids tells women of boeotia to dry seeds to start famine; athamas asks delphi for advice but ino lies and says that he must sacrifice phrixus to end plague. Before athamas tries, nephele puts her kids on back of flying ram w/ golden fleece.
