Document Summary

Digestive system takes in food, breaks it down, absorbs nutrients and eliminates the waste. There are two main organ groups of the digestive system: alimentary canal: gastrointestinal tract (gi tract) This is the tube that extends from your mouth to your anus. Their functions involve the secretion of saliva, bile, and digestive enzyme that allow for the breakdown of the food: the digestive process: Ingestion process by which the food enters the digestive process via the mouth. Propulsion movement of the food through the digestive tract via peristalsis. Mechanical digestion occurs immediately, this is the chewing of the food as it enters the mouth. Another example of the mechanical digestion is called the segmentation, and this is dividing of the food within the stomach to break it down even further. Chemical digestion this is the breakdown of the food into its chemical molecules such as simple sugars. Chemical breakdown occurs in the mouth, stomach, and small intestine.
