BIOL273 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Lymphatic Vessel, Lymph Node, B Cell
Document Summary
2 types of lymphoid organs: primary and secondary. Bone marrow all blood cells originate here. Thymus t lymphocytes (cells) mature here. Organs where lymphocytes interact and initiate responses. Spleen, lymph nodes, tonsils and gut associated lymphoid tissue (galt) Filter blood and lymph for pathogens & pathogen containing lymphocytes. Afferent lymph vessel brings lymphocytes from periphery. Efferent lymph vessel allows them to keep circulating. Pulp inside the lymph node allows mixing of lymphocytes and other leukocytes. Arteries and veins to supply nutrients & o2, plus non-lymphocytic leukocyte: spleen and lymph nodes surround by a fibrous wall encapsulated, tonsils and galt are unencapsulated tissue diffuse. Cells of the immune system: types of leukocytes. Larger in size than rbc but less numerous. Able to leave the blood stream and function extravascular (in the tissues) Have various lifespan some alive for a few hours, others for several months. Can be subdivided by function and/or morphology. Display fragments of pathogens on cell surface.
