The different types of bacteria used in this experiment are escherichia coli (e. coli), enterobater aerogenes, staphylococcus epidermidis, and enterococcus faecalis. These bacteria are turned into broth cultures and will be isolated through the use of a sterile swab. Enterococcus faecalis is a level 2 pathogen; meaning that pathogens can potentially spread and cause infections. Therefore, aseptic techniques should be used to properly isolate this bacterium. Three mediums were used in this experiment: eosin methylene blue agar (emb), tryptic soy. Emb is a differential and selective type of media, preventing gram positive organisms to grow. However, emb uses lactose as energy and allows orga(cid:374)is(cid:373)s to grow (cid:271)y (cid:272)reati(cid:374)g -galactosidase, which is an enzyme that breaks down lactose into galactose and glucose (alikunhi, et al. ,2017).
