Population Ecology
Demography is the study of factors that determine the size and structure of populations
through time.
o birth
o death
o immigration
o emigration
To make predictions about future populations - life table
o how many individuals of each age are alive
o how likely individuals of different ages are to survive to the following year
o how many offspring are produced by females of different ages
o Also need to know how many individuals of different ages immigrate and emigrate
each generations
Generation: mean age at which parents produce offspring
A life table summarizes the probability that an individual will survive and reproduce in any
given year over its entire lifetime.
Survivorship (lx): proportion of individuals remaining alive from one age class to the next
The survivorship curve is a plot of the logarithm of the number of survivorship versus age
o Helps us recognize general patterns in survivorship
o Helps us compare among populations or species
o Type I, II, III
Type I - Humans - relatively low juvenile and young adult mortality
Type II - most birds - constant risk of mortality through life
Type III - Trees - very high juvenile and young adult mortality
Fecundity (mx) - defined as the number of female offspring produced by each female in the
population
Age-specific fecundity - defined as the number of female offspring produced by each female
in a given age class
Net reproductive rate (R0)
o R0 = sum lxmx
R0 > 1 - growing population
R0 = 1 - stable population
R0 < 1 - shrinking population
