Even before the dna code was understood, it was known that the information contained in genes somehow directed the synthesis of proteins. Proteins are the principal constituents of cells, and determine structure and function. Dna: synthesizes proteins and also delegates various tasks. When a particular protein is needed by the cell, nucleotide sequence of a dna molecule (gene) is first copied into rna. Resulting rna copies used to direct protein synthesis. Central dogma - dna to rna to protein. Many genes code for rna that is not mrna. Rna involved in transcription regulation, processing of mrna prior to translation, translation. Transcription and translation are processes which cells express instructions in genes. Many identical rna copies can be made from the same gene, and each rna molecule can direct the synthesis of many identical protein molecules. Cells rapidly synthesize large amounts of protein whenever necessary.
