Document Summary

Cell bio bites topic: melanophores and microtubule monorails- insights into rapid colour change in fish and amphibians. Define the key terms (scientific words) in your own words. (notes or textbook can be used as sources) Melanophores: a cell that contains a black or brown pigment, called melanin, that is typically located in fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Microtubule: hollow fibrous rods that have a main function of supporting and maintaining the shape of the cell. Monorail: is one of the functions of a microtubule which move organelles through the cytoplasm using proteins. These proteins bind to the object and to the microtubule. The organelle is then inched along as though it was walking. Melanin: the brown or black colour found in animals and plants. Usually the colour of scales, hair, skin etc. The evolutionary adaptions of melanophores can possibly lead to pain reliving applications for those afflicted with parkinson"s disease.
